Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis is very common in Vietnam but has not received adequate attention from many parents.
Vietnam, with its hot and humid climate, creates favorable conditions for the growth of bacteria and viruses.
Many individuals with tonsillitis may experience recurrent episodes multiple times a year.

WHAT ARE THE TONSILS?

The tonsils are lymphoid tissue in the throat and mouth area, with a unique structure containing many crevices and small cavities, which inadvertently become a habitat for pathogens.
The tonsils help prevent the entry of bacteria, viruses, and fungi that can harm the respiratory system while also producing immunity for the body.
The tonsils frequently come into contact with bacteria and viruses, making them susceptible to weakening and becoming swollen and inflamed.
The immune system in young children and the elderly is weakened, creating more opportunities for viruses and bacteria to attack. Therefore, these are high-risk groups that are more susceptible to illness.
Untreated tonsillitis can increase the risk of many dangerous diseases.
FUNCTIONS OF THE TONSILS
The tonsils are a specific immune barrier for children. However, when children reach puberty, the tonsils' functionality declines.
When the body is healthy, the tonsils act as a filter, protecting the body and the nasal-pharyngeal system from harmful agents.
Recurrent tonsillitis can lead to the risk of dangerous syndromes such as peritonsillar abscess, neck abscess, sleep apnea, which can significantly affect overall health.
CAUSES OF TONSILLITIS
Bacteria (Streptococcal...), viruses (influenza, Parainfluenza, herpes simplex, Epstein-Barr...).
Use of alcohol, beer, and tobacco.
The sudden change in weather, environmental pollution, and harmful dust; patients with a history of VA inflammation, sinusitis, dental inflammation...

SUSCEPTIBLE POPULATIONS / PATIENT DEMOGRAPHICS
Occurs in many age groups, especially in those with a history of respiratory diseases, and conditions related to the respiratory tract such as rhinitis, sinusitis...
Additionally, young children are also a high-risk group because:
• Children often suffer from bacterial tonsillitis, most commonly seen in children aged 5 to 15 years.
• School-aged children often have close contact with friends in classrooms, making them very susceptible to viruses or bacteria that cause tonsillitis.
COMMON SYMPTOMS OF TONSILLITIS
• Sore throat, difficulty swallowing, fever, headache.
• Cough, hoarseness due to complications of laryngitis.
• The tonsils are swollen, red, and have white patches and pus.
• Swollen and painful cervical lymph nodes.
• Shortness of breath, wheezing, and snoring due to chronic hypertrophic tonsillitis.
In children, additional symptoms may include: Abdominal discomfort. Vomiting. Abdominal pain. Drooling. Loss of appetite.
If symptoms last less than 10 days, it is called acute tonsillitis. Recurrent inflammation multiple times a year is considered chronic tonsillitis.
